Postholer Trail App

Postby postholer » Tue Feb 19, 2013 11:03 pm

The Postholer Trail App is the latest addition to the postholer site!

The app has 3 main features, water reports, trail reports and trail chatter. You'll need a postholer account to install the app. At install you can customize for any trail the postholer site hosts. Just reinstall the app if you hike a different trail.

The url to install or reinstall the app is:

Once installed the url for shortcuts or using the app is:

Water Reports allow you to send the latest information on the condition of a water source while you're standing there. This information is useful for those who may be hours or days behind you on the trail. It's also great for those who compile water reports.

Trail Reports is similar to water reports as it allows timely information to find its way to trail maintainers and those who manage the trail. Here's an excellent post on how to report a trail problem as you encounter them. This feature is also great for closures such as fires or other long term detours.

Trail Chatter gives hikers a means to communicate among themselves as they travel the trail. It allows folks to stay in touch while not acutally hiking together.

Trail & Water Reports require you to enter a latitude/longitude, it's optional for Trail Chatter. Location information can be read right off your smartphone GPS which makes it painless. It can also be entered manually.

You can retrieve up to 250 reports or 30 days worth and store them on your device. You can also view all reports on the trail reports page from any computer.

This is a 'web app' meaning it will run on either Android or iPhone or any modern mobile browser. Like any app it needs an internet connection to send/receive information. When you don't have a connection any messages you send are queued. The app will try to send any queued messages at 4 hour intervals or you can force a send when you know you have a connection when between intervals.

The app was developed on an Android platform, but as mentioned it will run on an iPhone as well. If you have any issues or feedback, please let us know right here.
