It is with sadness that I am announcing the end of our PCT journey. After a brief stay in Seattle and a wonderful visit with my dad, we headed back onto the trail to begin section "I", heading south of Snoqualmie Pass. We started just before noon and went 8 miles to beautiful Mirror Lake. After much discussion that evening after setting up camp, and extending through most of the next morning, we decided to head back to Snoqualmie Pass to end the hike.
Don't get me wrong, it was an amazing experience with some of the most beautiful and breathtaking wilderness that I have ever seen. The people we met along the way were friendly and generous, a gentle reminder that the state of the world these days is not all bad. In retrospect, it would have been more appropriate to plan a 2-4 week hike, something already far longer than anything I've ever attempted before. I think I bit off more than I could chew and realized that spending four months in the wilderness takes a special person. I didn't understand what we were getting ourselves into. To Tom's credit, I know he could've and would've done the whole thing. He is very level-headed and capable in the wilderness, and is also very comfortable in this type of environment. I do regret asking him to leave the trail so soon. Although we considered my leaving the trail, and his continuing the journey solo, it didn't feel right and we wanted to stay together.
We will be back in Albuquerque in the not too distant future, but will first spend some time in the Sierras and parts of Oregon, doing shorter hikes and backpacking trips and even some canoeing! For friends and family who would like to follow this part of the journey, I will try to post some stuff on our old blog site, "Adventures with Murphitude." The address is http://murphitude.blogspot.com
Thanks for supporting us! It was truly a great adventure.
