Pacific Crest Trail Map

June 5, 2007: 4:49 p.m. PST

Barring any unforeseen difficulties, i.e. premature loss of employment or lack of kitty sitters, I intend to leave the U.S.-Mexico border near Campo, California on Friday, April 25th, 2008 and walk approximately 2,650 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) to Manning Park, British Columbia, Canada.

I have wanted to hike the PCT before setting foot on the Appalachian Trail (AT). At the time, I'd never been on an overnight backpacking trip and decided that I would be more likely to finish a long distance trail if I were further away from home. As such, I chose the AT and completed it in August, 2005 over a period of 155 days. Since then, I've been on a few single night backpacking trips and cannot help but remember that nothing compares to being out in the wilderness for an extended period of time. I have a definite craving to be back out there, living the simple life.

This Spring, I found it very difficult to convince myself to not hike the PCT this year. Reading the PCT-L on a daily basis didn't make it any easier, though my involvement with the Mazamas did help take the edge off. My primary reason for not hiking the PCT this year was to establish a longer period of employment, especially since this is my first engineering job after college. I believe that working my current job for at least 2.5 years will be acceptable for my resume and I will reach that milestone in April, 2008.

On the AT, many people expressed their desire to someday hike the AT themselves and I would tell them, "You just have to go and do it." Today I began reading the journals of a couple current PCT thru-hikers and thought to myself, "Why am I not just going and doing it?"

I've made up my mind.

I have to go.

I will go.
