the gear piles in my room

If my Mum saw this photograph it would probably remind her of the state my room was in when I tried to clean up as a child. Everything turns ito a huge mess and slowly slowly some kind of order emerges. Nothing has changed with my strategy on this one and I'm optimistic that this time, too, there will be a bunch of neatly stacked boxes and a backpack at the end of it. After all, I am going to be on the trail in exactly a week. THE trail that I have been dreaming of and imagining for quite a while. Hard to believe that it is only such a short time away.

Thanks to Lauren this site will be occasionally updated with my tales from the PCT. Please check back in and read, often times it will be the only way I communicate.

101 marathons - this is what I intended to do when I set out from Campo. 101 x 26.2miles (the length of a marathon) = 2646.2 miles, about the distance of the PCT. I hiked about 76 of them this summer, the remaining 25 saved for the seasons to come.

When you read this journal, you will notice that I often write as "we". This is always me (obviously) but not always with the same person and not always with one person either. "we" started out meaning Sophie and me, then there was Charles and Monty and a lot of other trail buddies, Bryan being the one person I actually hiked an entire state with (Washington).

Lauren, Jules and Dagmar entered a lot of these trail journal entries. From time to time they edited my entries and you will find a bit of humor added by them. Enjoy!
