So here it is. The first entry. It's almost midnight and instead of studying for my test tomorrow I'm writing this. I couldn't help it. I was taking a study break and started looking at other people's journals and it just got me so excited about starting mine. I'm kind of at a lost as to what to write. I guess I'll start with a little bit about myself and why I'm doing this.

I'm a soon to be college graduate (just have one more week of classes and two finals and I'm done!) from a small town in Eastern Oregon. I plan on taking next year off, doing the hike, and working once that's done. Then it's off to grad school to get my Ph.D. in Immunology/Virology/Public Health (somewhere in that general area) in Fall 2011.

Why am I doing this? Well part of it is my family. Backpacking has always been part of my life. My family goes backpacking every summer, and my dad, especially, has been a big inspiration for why I'm doing this. He's always talked about hiking the PCT and I've just grown up with this notion that I'm going to hike it one day. And now I am! Besides my family's inspiration, it's something I want to do for me. Some people go to Europe after college, I'm walking to Canada. It's my big adventure before I have to go out into the real world. It's coming up so fast and I feel like I still have so much left to do and figure. Not only do I have to finish getting everything ready for the hike, but I have to finish up the term and move out of my apartment (I hate packing). It's feeling a little overwhelming but it'll all work out. So I'm trying not to stress out to much.

So why do a journal? I decided to write this journal for myself so I have something I can look back on and remember everything, for my friends who think I'm going to get eaten by a bear or attacked by a PCT serial killer, for my family who are nothing but supportive, for fellow hikers, past, present, and future, as a (hopefully) useful resource about the trail, and for anyone else who loves the trail and wants to follow my adventure.

Just about a month left before I hit the trail. To the class of 2010 can't wait to see you out there!
